PLASTIC SOUP - 2015

Plastic shopping bag woven net, 59 plastic items

The intention of this work is to highlight how plastic pollution has a direct effect on marine wildlife. Specifically referencing a 10 meter long sperm whale that washed ashore on the Southern coast of Spain. The whale had swallowed 59 plastic objects totaling over 17kgs. The cause of death was intestinal blockage.

Each of the 59 objects used in this installation were found discarded and typically the type of objects that make their way into our oceans, contributing to massive floating garbage patches and turning our ocean into a giant plastic soup.

This work was exhibited at the Earthbeats Festival, Albany, Auckland in 2016. The again at the EA Arts festival at The Cloud, Auckland 2017.
